Several hundred bird species around the world are considered pigeons or doves. These peaceful birds are known for making a gentle cooing sound. Most pigeons are grey in color, but in Australia and the surrounding areas, many have shades of green and are as brightly colored as parrots. The blue Victoria crowned pigeon of New Guinea is the largest in the world - it is the size of a turkey.
Pigeons are not considered to be bright birds and they may be used representatively of such. More commonly, they symbolize the urban life of the big cities they populate. Some cities, such as New York and Paris, are especially well known for their pigeon populations. A white pigeon or dove is a symbol of peace, especially if it carries an olive leaf in its mouth.
In former times, pigeons were also used to carry messages. A note would be tied to the leg of a homing pigeon or carrier pigeon. Upon being released, it would return to its birthplace, bringing the message with it.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Pigeon
1. Begin by drawing the eye. Draw a curved line, and enclose a partial circle on top of it. Draw two successively smaller circles within the eye, and shade between them to indicate the pupil. Draw a thick line above the eye to form the eyebrow.
2. Use curved lines to sketch the pigeon's beak. Use two curved lines for the triangular shape of the upper beak, and enclose the lower portion with a third line. Use curved lines to outline the cere above the beak. This is the location of the bird's nose.
3. Use curved lines to outline the head and neck. Note the feathery overlap at the base of the neck. Use a series of curved lines to outline the cheek.
4. Outline the back and the top of the wing using a long curved line. Then, Use shorter overlapping lines to form the wing's feathers and shoulder.
5. Draw a series of wavy lines across the wing, indicating the pattern of the feathers.
6. Use a long curved line to outline the bird's chest and belly. Draw a series of connected, curved lines around the base of the neck.
7. Outline the upper leg with a pair of curved lines, and connect them with a series of lines. Then, use straight and curved lines to sketch the lower leg and toes.
8. Draw the remaining leg. Again, use curved lines to enclose the upper leg, then move onto the lower leg and toes.
9. Draw the bird's tail. Extend a pair of curved lines, and connect them using a series of "U" shaped lines. Draw another series of "U" shaped lines across the tail to indicate the layers of feathers. Finally, connect the tail to the leg with a curved line, completing the outline of the animal.
Color your pigeon. Grey and purple or green and yellow? The choice is yours.
